UN Maldives Waste Management Partnership Lab

Harnessing the power of partnership to build a circular economy

During 2022, as part of the Partnership Accelerator Programme, a major collaboration between TPI and the United Nations, we worked with the Government of Maldives (through the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure) and the UN Resident Coordinators’ Office in Maldives to facilitate a virtual Partnership Lab on Waste Management.

The Lab convened key actors working on waste management in the Maldives to explore areas for collaboration and develop new partnership ideas. The Lab introduced findings from consultations with stakeholders and discussed options for a Maldives Partnership Platform as a mechanism to convene stakeholders and support partnerships moving forward.

Maldives faces a series of unique issues in waste management, particularly caused by the geography. The geography of this island nation can lead to silos and fragmentation when trying to coordinate among over 190 inhabited islands. Effective partnerships can help with coordination, comprehensive policymaking and the sharing of experiences and best practices. The proposed Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform will work to help strengthen relationships between stakeholders and sectors, identify challenges in collaborations, build new partnerships and increase engagement.
